The Story Behind Ocean Layers

In Kuna tradition, each mola carries both what is seen and what is hidden — a reflection of the belief that all things in nature have duality. The layered textile in this Ocean Layers boot captures that philosophy perfectly, with each cut of fabric revealing colors and forms beneath the surface, like the shifting tones of the ocean.

This piece began in the hands of a Kuna artisan, layering and cutting cotton panels in the centuries-old reverse-appliqué technique. Every line and curve was stitched by hand, a process that can take weeks to complete.

Once the panel was finished, it was brought to our small-batch shoemaking partners in Colombia. There, it was hand-cut into deep blue leather and shaped into a high-top lace-up boot, adding comfort-focused details like a cushioned insole and supportive sole.

Your purchase helps sustain Kuna artisans in Panama and Colombia, preserving a cultural tradition and providing fair income for their families.

Wear Ocean Layers, and you carry both the depth and the surface beauty of a living tradition.
